Niketa Calame, who plays this petite, packed with energy, ingénue, in real life has solid theatrical/musical degrees & credits). Calame plays her role to perfection, as co-star and in role of wide-eyed hopeful

 Aint Misbeavin has been my most challenging project yet. Such a rewarding experience over all. The way that Fats Waller has composed these intricut harmonies we just dont sing like that anymore
The old days of Lena Horne, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Louie Armstrong, Dorthy Dandridge are gone but they are very present in Aint Misbehavin. And I get to play in my favorite era The Harlem Rennissance.  I used to say I was an Jazz singer in the 20's 30's in my former life. And and The International City Theater from October 12 -

November 4th I get to pretend that I was there.  My cast mates are wonderful and we have helped each other through this really interteresting process. We had two weeks to put this show up.  And all the hard work and previous training was def needed to pull off such a thing.  I am just overjoyed to be playing this part at this time in my career, after a sucessful run of The Color Purple at The Celebration Theater as Squeak.  We received 13 Ovation Award Nominations, the most nominated show of the year.  So right after I have fun with the run of Aint Misbehavin closing November 4th. I go right to The Historic Los Angeles Theater for a black tie evening at the Ovation Awards hopin and praying that we snag some of those awards.  Also getting to work with such amazing talented black actors this year has made me realize there is a disconnect with the industry and their perception of what talent is out there. I worked with 16 great black actors in The Color Purple and 4 great black actors in Aint Misbehavin.  We are out here. I just thank God everyday for showing me my passion so early in life. I have been a paid actor since I was 8 and I will keep at it until God takes me home.  It has been a rollor coaster with some very high highs and some lows, and that builds tough skin which you need in this crazy but wonderful industry. Im in love with being a creative artist and I wouldnt change it for anything in the world.  Some people wonder how you do it, the high money then the broke times how do you keep sane.  When you are living out your passion you are so fulfilled that even the low times are not that bad, challenging yes but just test from God to say "Will you continue to step out on faith". He gave me this talent how dare I even think of not using it.

great audition experience

So I had an audition with Micheal Donovan one of the biggest stage casting directors in LA. So I walk into the room he complements me on how I look for the audition for Ain't Misbehavin. I give my music to the pianist. I sing Distant and the director tells me to do it again with an adjustment. Then there is silence I'm like do they want me to say thank you or do they want more. He says work on that song at home with what I talked about. And my heart began to crush as I rushed to my car feeling very untalented. Just as I'm about to drive off the casting associate says they want to see me again. I go back in and the girl who was next was out in the waiting room again. I walk in and they ask for another song. I give the pianist " Don't get around much anynorw" by the duke one of my gave and they start smiling. Director gives me another adjustments that just opens my voice and I belted out the jazzy tune. They were like yes that's it put that first song away we were about to diregaurd you. They said I light up the room and I have a wonderful voice like a yee I start crying and saying thank u. Choreographer said I light up the room as well. Lesson one pick songs that really bring out your true personality. Lesson two don't leave so quickly after your audition just in case. Lesson three always believe that u are good enough.

Staying Prayed Up In This Business

It's crazy because you can't progress as at a fast rate in this industry without money but you also can't progress at a fast rate in a full time job getting you the money to progress faster in this industry. "And I think to myself what a wonderful world" lol. Finding a balance of putting food on your table and keeping a roof over your head and having empty time to fly to an audition at any time of the day. Everytime I say just forget it and get a full time oh how the auditions come rolling in and I end up quoting before I get fired from all the random absences. All u can do is get super creative for income and stay prayed up in setting yourself in the right company of folks right scene for progress right agency or manager for help with good auditions and keep the chops up to book the job.
